i've added a checkbox under preferences for debug mode.  if that is
selected, any gdk warnings will result in an abort () which gdb can
give a coherent backtrace for.  if you are just trying to run it and
don't really care what is going wrong, leave the debug button
unchecked.

gwp requires gnome-print and gnome-xml.  these can be found in the top
level of the gnome cvs tree.

there is an environment variable GWP_PLUGIN_PATH which holds a :
separated list of directories in which to find gwp plugins.  for
example

  export GWP_PLUGIN_PATH=./plugins/io/.libs

or

  set env GWP_PLUGIN_PATH ./plugins/io/.libs

would tell gwp to look for plugins in the build directory (although it
will try that anyif if GWP_PLUGIN_PATH isn't set).
